GM Officially Announces Pontiac's Death, Saab, Hummer and Saturn to be Gone by 2009

This is the end of the road for Pontiac as General Motors confirmed earlier media reports by officially announcing on Monday the death of the 83-year-old marque that will be phased out by the end of 2010. As part of its revised "Viability Plan" that accelerates the timeline for a number of important actions, GM said that it will speed up "the resolution of Saab, Saturn, and Hummer to the end of 2009, at the latest." The General will focus on four core brands in the U.S., Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC, offering a total of 34 nameplates in 2010 compared to 48 in 2008, a reduction of 29 percent.

"We are taking tough but necessary actions that are critical to GM's long-term viability," said Fritz Henderson, GM president and CEO. "Our responsibility is clear - to secure GM's future - and we intend to succeed. At the same time, we also understand the impact these actions will have on our employees, dealers, unions, suppliers, shareholders, bondholders, and communities, and we will do whatever we can to mitigate the effects on the extended GM team."

Other significant changes in GM's updated "Viability Plan" include the accelerated idling and closures of powertrain, stamping, and assembly plants while the firm will almost cut its U.S. dealer count in half, from 6,246 in 2008 to 3,605 by the end of 2010. This is a further reduction of 500 dealers, and four years sooner, than the previous plan submitted to the U.S. Treasury on February 17.

And how will all these measures affect U.S. workers? According to GM, the updated plan will see an additional reduction of 7,000 to 8,000 hourly employees. Overall, U.S. hourly employment levels are projected to be reduced from about 61,000 in 2008 to 40,000 in 2010, a 34 percent reduction, and level off at about 38,000 starting in 2011.

BREAKING: GM Issues Official Statement on Pontiac Death Rumors

General Motors decided to take action and issue an official statement in regards of news reports from Edmund's Insideline and Autonews saying that the automaker had decided to axe the Pontiac brand instead of keeping it as a 'specialty-marque' as was the initial plan. While GM denied the fact that it has changed any of its plans, the American automaker didn't exactly say that the future of Pontiac is secured even in the form of a niche-brand.

"Contrary to media speculation, General Motors has not announced any changes to its long-term viability plan or to the future status of any of its brands. GM is continuing to review its restructuring plan to go further and faster and best ensure its future success. Additional information will be released as any decisions are finalized said GM in a statement," the automaker said in the statement titled "Pontiac Statement Re: Media Speculation"

We remind you that earlier today, General Motors announced that it received an additional US$2 billion in government loans to help the company to maintain adequate liquidity.

Pontiac Reportedly to be Pronounced Dead on Monday

Citing an anonymous source within General Motors, Edmund's Insideline is reporting that the American automaker could announce the 'death sentence' for Pontiac as early as this Monday. If this is the case, then GM's original plans to keep Pontiac as a 'specialty' brand with niche products have gone out the window and the maker of the iconic GTO as well as of the Aztec (let's not forget about the flops) will join the fate of Saab, Hummer and Saturn.

Insideline called GM's spokesman Tom Wilkinson to ask him about the news, but the answer was somewhat vague. "There's nothing I can share with you at this time. Keep your eyes on our media site. Officially, nothing has changed with Pontiac's niche-brand status, until you hear differently," Wilkinson was quoted as saying. Either way, one thing's for sure; Pontiac's fate seems doomed...

Le géant automobile japonais Toyota a, pour la première fois en 72 ans d'histoire, signé l'arrêt de mort probable d'une usine en annonçant vendredi son départ de Nummi, la coentreprise qu'il détenait avec son concurrent américain General Motors en Californie.

Cette décision a été prise après l'annonce en juin par General Motors, en faillite, de son propre retrait de Nummi (New United Motor Manufacturing Inc.), fondée en 1984 et qui emploie 4 700 personnes. Sauf dans le cas improbable d'une reprise par un autre groupe, le retrait de Toyota revient à liquider purement et simplement Nummi, qui deviendra ainsi la toute première usine fermée par le constructeur nippon en 72 ans d'histoire...

Après le départ de GM, "Toyota a étudié de façon détaillée les alternatives possibles, à la lumière des conditions de marché présentes et à venir. En nous basant sur cette étude, nous avons déterminé qu'à moyen et long terme, il ne serait pas viable économiquement de poursuivre le contrat de production avec Nummi", a déclaré lors d'une conférence téléphonique le vice-président de Toyota Atsushi Niimi, qui dirige les opérations du groupe en Amérique du Nord. "Les coûts d'exploitation sont très élevés en Californie", a-t-il expliqué, notamment parce que les fournisseurs sont basés très loin, dans le Midwest. "C'est très malheureux, et nous regrettons profondément d'avoir à prendre cette décision", s'est-il lamenté. Selon lui, "Nummi a été un modèle de collaboration industrielle entre le Japon et les Etats-Unis".

M. Niimi s'est toutefois refusé à admettre que la décision de Toyota revenait à fermer l'usine, capable de produire 400 000 véhicules par an. "Le contrat de production avec Toyota se terminera le 31 mars 2010. A la fin de ce contrat, ce que deviendra Nummi dépendra des négociations entre la direction de Nummi, l'ex General Motors et Toyota", a-t-il déclaré. Il s'est refusé à pronostiquer ce que deviendront les 4 700 employés, et n'a fourni aucune estimation du coût du retrait pour Toyota.

Basée à Fremont, près de San Francisco, Nummi est détenue à parité par Toyota et par General Motors. Il s'agit officiellement d'une entreprise "indépendante" liée à ses deux propriétaires par des contrats de production. La production par Nummi de la Pontiac Vibe pour General Motors a cessé le 17 août. Pour rappel, la marque Pontiac doit disparaître des marchés automobile d'ici 2011. Pour Toyota, Nummi produit la berline Corolla et le SUV Tacoma.

La production des Tacoma sera transférée vers l'usine Toyota de San Antonio (Texas, Etats-Unis), et celle des Corolla vers Cambridge (Ontario, Canada) ainsi qu'au Japon. "Nous restons fermement engagés à maintenir une présence substantielle en termes de production aux Etats-Unis", a affirmé M. Niimi. "A cette fin, nous envisagerons de transférer davantage de production de Corolla en Amérique du Nord au fil du temps", a-t-il promis.

Il y a peu, General Motors annonçait la vente de ses véhicules sur le web, précisément sur le site de vente eBay. Le premier bilan de cette action n'est pas vraiment rose.

Selon le constructeur GM, et son associé dans cette action, eBay, 2 400 ventes ont été enrgistrées sur le site eBay réservé au groupe américain. Malheureusement, seule une cinquantaine de véhicules ont été vendus au final. Ce qui ne fait pas de cette action, certes originale, un réel succés. 632 000 visites ont quand même visité le site la première semaine aprés le lancement. GM a déclaré que les acheteurs potentiels ont surtout utilisés le site pour découvrir les offres avant de se rendre en concessions.

John Mc Donald, porte-parole de GM, affirme qu'il est encore un peu tôt pour tirer un bilan de l’opération commerciale, qui se terminera le 8 septembre prochain. "Entre une visite et l’achat final, les consommateurs peuvent prendre plusieurs semaines avant de se décider", indique le représentant du groupe.

[Fresh] Death of Pontiac in 2010

Pontiac s'arrêtera définiteement en 2010. C'est en tout cas l'intention de General Motors si aucun reprenneur potentiel ne se manifeste d'ici là.



Le constructeur automobile General Motors a annoncé lundi que sa marque Pontiac, qu'elle entendait jusqu'ici conserver comme une marque de niche, allait disparaître d'ici la fin 2010, et qu'une décision serait prise d'ici la fin de l'année sur Saab, Saturn et Hummer.

Par ailleurs, General Motors supprimera 7 000 à 8 000 emplois supplémentaires parmi ses ouvriers par rapport à ses plans initiaux, ce qui va ramener ses effectifs de production aux Etats-Unis de 61 000 fin 2008 à 40 000 en 2010.
